Sage Creek is the part of the Badlands the road lets go of. Sixty-four thousand acres of mixed-grass prairie, eroding tables, and quiet washes, with the park's bison herd ranging through it and almost no trails. Hikers walk by drainage and by the lay of the land. Storms come up fast and the gumbo turns to glue after rain. The light at dusk is the thing people come back for — long, low, and the colour of dried hay.
