Comfort historic district

A town settled in 1854 by German Freethinkers from the Adelsverein wave, set where Cypress Creek runs into the Guadalupe. The main street runs three blocks of unpainted limestone storefronts, most of them built between 1860 and 1910, almost none of them altered. Comfort never incorporated, never grew, never tore much down. On the small park west of the square stands the Treue der Union monument, the South's only obelisk to Unionists, raised over the bones of the men killed at the Nueces in 1862. The afternoon light on the stone is the colour of old butter.
