Destin emerald gulf beach

The Gulf reads green at Destin because the sand is almost pure quartz, washed down the Apalachicola River from the southern Appalachians and sorted clean by 20,000 years of waves. The grains scatter the shorter wavelengths back through shallow water and the colour comes out emerald. East Pass cuts the harbour open to the Gulf. Charter boats run out before dawn. The beach itself reads white enough to need sunglasses by mid-morning.
