Glacier Peak
$22.00
The most remote of Washington's five major volcanoes, rising to 10,541 feet in the Glacier Peak Wilderness. No paved road reaches it. The shortest approach walks in twenty-some miles from the Suiattle River trailhead, through hemlock and cedar and over the white passes above the Sauk drainage. Climbers come for the ice; everyone else comes for the silence the long approach buys. From most lowland viewpoints the peak hides behind closer ridges, which is half the reason it stayed quiet in the public mind even after it last blew ash across the basin about 13,000 years ago.
