The Lower Falls of the Gooseberry River, downstream of the Highway 61 bridge in Gooseberry Falls State Park. The river crosses dark basalt left by ancient lava flows and steps down toward Lake Superior, which is close enough here to smell. Fewer visitors come this far than to the Middle Falls; the path drops through birch and cedar to a quieter ledge. In spring meltwater the drop runs heavy and brown; by August the rock shows through.
