Natural Bridge of Virginia

Cedar Creek runs at the bottom of a narrow gorge in the Blue Ridge foothills, and over a long enough span of years it ate through the limestone above its own bed and left a single arch behind. Two hundred and fifteen feet tall, ninety feet across at the span, still load-bearing — US Route 11 carries traffic over the top, mostly unaware. Thomas Jefferson bought the bridge from King George in 1774 and called it the most sublime of nature's works. Below, on the gravel path along the creek, the arch reads as a single grey vault against the sky.
