The promenade runs the length of two beaches — Primera and Segunda del Sardinero — with the Gran Casino at the high point and the green of the Magdalena peninsula closing the bay to the south. Alfonso XIII summered here, and the Belle Époque hotels along the paseo still face the water the way they did in 1916. The light off the Cantabrian Sea is silver more often than blue.
