Terlingua sits on a low mesa in the Big Bend country, an hour west of the national park. The mercury mines closed in the 1940s and the town walked away from itself; the adobe walls have been weathering down to the colour of the surrounding rock ever since. The Starlight Theatre, built in 1931 as a community hall, reopened decades later as a restaurant and porch. The chili cook-off comes in November.

Slowly infused into the ceramic surface under high heat and pressure, in our family studio in Knoxville, Tennessee.
