Vai palm forest beach

At the far eastern end of Crete, a valley of native Cretan date palms opens onto a curve of pale sand. The grove is a remnant — Phoenix theophrasti has grown on this shore since antiquity, the only palm forest native to Europe. Pliny knew it. The road in is long, the air smells of salt and resin, and the boardwalk keeps the roots clear of the foot traffic. — from the studio
