Valladolid Plaza Mayor
$22.00
A wide rectangle of arcaded buildings painted Castilian red, set in the centre of Valladolid. After a fire in 1561, Philip II had the square rebuilt to a single regular plan — the first plaza mayor of its kind in Spain. The arcades on the ground floor were laid for shelter and shop fronts; the iron balconies above for watching the city from a chair. Madrid's and Salamanca's squares were modelled on this one. Pedro Ansúrez stands in bronze at the centre.
